Ardipithecus ramidus (possible human ancestor) – Video

PROBLEMS WITH THIS PORTRAYAL

INCORRECT INFORMATION:

All evidence points against Ardipithecus ramidus being a specialized fruit-eater. Instead an analysis of its teeth suggests that it ate a generalized diet of plants, meat, and fruit.

A. ramidus‘ face was much less ‘flat’/human-like than shown in the video. Instead it was very similar to that of chimps. This can be seen in the much more realistic reconstruction provided by the Smithsonian Institution. However, there are a few primates, which, despite not even being thought as being closely related to humans, have surprisingly ‘flat,’ human-like faces. A good example of this is the face of Gee’s golden langur: https://i.vimeocdn.com/video/603047348_1280x720.jpg

OTHER ISSUES:

While there is a wide agreement among experts that A. ramidus‘ skeleton shows adaptations for tree-climbing and bipedal activity, and that it likely roamed in the trees and on the ground; its hypothesized ability to actually walk on two feet is disputed.

It is amusing to see A. ramidus being pictured and described in this video as being slow on the ground and facing many dangers while there. Aside from the fact that there is no evidence (or even theories) for either, the video itself demonstrates the absurdity of such a possibility: A primate adapted for tree-climbing, would soon go extinct if it habitually ventured onto open ground, if it was slow on the ground and an easy, habitual meal for local, ground-dwelling predators.
